Kate Archer left home years ago, swearing that she would die before she returned to Maine. As plans go, it was a pretty good one — simple and straightforward.
Not quite fast enough, though.
Before she can quite manage the dying part, Kate gets notice that her grandmother is missing, leaving the carousel that is the family business untended.
And in Archers Beach, that means ‘way more trouble than just a foreclosure.

Advanced Praise for Carousel Tides
“Carousel Tides pulls you into the chill foggy reality of peeling-paint sand-grit coastal Maine outside of tourist season and then hands you something else — the hidden world lurking in shadows or under the land’s surface or just offshore, where Black Dogs hunt the night and selkies toss unpleasant truths over their shoulders before diving into the next wave. In the center of this, Kate Archer tends and guards one of the spookiest carousels this side of Ray Bradbury and wonders what has happened to her grandmother. The old woman sent her a letter, left papers deeding over the carousel and old house and the Land (meaning much more than property), and vanished, telling the spirits of the land and sea that she expected to be back before the turning of the year.
“Now March has come and gone and Kate must return from self-exile to take up powers and responsibilities she has renounced, or dying will be the least of her problems...
“Sharon Lee weaves fantasy into reality so deftly that you scarcely notice when you slip across the edge. And once you’re there, the story’s own magic won’t let you turn back from the strong characters, deep mysteries, and even deeper danger.” —James A. Hetley, author of Dragon’s Eye, Dragon’s Teeth, and Dragon’s Bones

“Proof that contemporary fantasy is alive and well and living beyond the big city limits — Carousel Tides is a worthy inheritor to Charles DeLint’s Newford series, and magical in its own right. Delightful.” — Laura Anne Gilman, author of Hard Magic

“Sharon Lee is one of my all-time favorite authors, a gifted storyteller whose work never fails to enchant. With Carousel Tides she gives her fans another opportunity to spend time with fascinating characters, bringing them to life in a place that becomes so real you can smell the salt air around you. Her fine hand with detail never lets the suspense falter, as mystery, folklore, and magic are artfully interwoven into a thoroughly engaging tale. Carousel Tides will leave you eagerly awaiting the next novel by this master.” —Jan Burke, author of The Messenger, Bones, and Bloodlines

“Sharon Lee’s finely observed detail evokes magic in Maine and gives conviction to six alternate, richly-inhabited universes.” — Rob Weisbrot, author of Xena Warrior Princess and Hercules, the Legendary Journeys The Official Companion

“Carousel Tides is a gripping, enthralling read that I didn’t want to put down for any reason. From its beautifully detailed small-town Maine setting to a cosmology that manages to be unique and familiar at the same time, this book demonstrates the best of what urban fantasy can be. It’s rare that I find a book I can recommend without any reservations; Carousel Tides is one of those books.” — Seanan McGuire, author of Rosemary and Rue, A Local Habitation, and An Artificial Night

What a thoroughly enjoyable book! Kate is coming home to the town that she exiled herself from ten years previously. She is worried that she hasn't heard from her grandmother. She immediately finds herself embroiled in a number of natural and supernatural problems. The town wants the amusement park opened weeks early; the wards that keep some of the animals on the carousel imprisoned are weakening. Assassins are targeting Kate and the land is in need of her help.Kate is an engaging character. She had sentenced herself to death because of her guilt about the death of a friend. She is capable of doing great magic but she knows the cost of doing so. She is reluctant to get involved in the magic again because she worries that she might not be able to control it. She is an escapee from another of the six worlds where she was the victim of an powerful and power-hungry magic user.
I enjoyed the new and tentative romance between Kate and Brogan. The romance is complicated by the rules of the fae. She isn't trusting of strangers and he seems to delight in keeping secrets. Also, it is not ideal to start a romance in the midst of battles and danger.
The story will filled with adventure and excitement. I recommend it for lovers of urban fantasy (well, maybe, small town fantasy). I found the writing engaging and compelling.

Carousel Tides Carousel Tides Series Book 1 eBook Sharon Lee Reviews
I love the Liaden universe that this author and her husband have created in other books. In this book though she stays on Earth but gives a lovely fairy twist to it creating a Maine that is filled with magic and magical creatures but somehow seems normal. Not everyone can do that.
As usual her character development is excellent and you feel like you know the people in the book by the time you are done. I hope there is a second book expanding it even more. And it would be great to visit Maine and see the scenery of the area it is based on.
Some people think they don't like science fiction. Well, this isn't science fiction. It is a novel with some magic in it which is a great introduction to this writer's work. As with all her work this book is great for men and women and teens.
Plot's been summarized elsewhere. It was a good plot, and I liked it as I tore through the book for the first time and expect to like it when I reread, and it wraps up nicely while also leaving room for a sequel (pretty please?) But the thing I liked most about Carousel Tides was the way it respected genre elements without falling into triteness. There are selkies, and fae from other dimensions, and people (using the term loosely) with a mystic tie to the land or the ocean, but they are also clearly, complexly characterized individuals. There's a romance subplot, but you can see why the characters are interested in each other, and it's not - entirely - due to some supernatural link between them. And it doesn't lead them to pay too much attention to having sex with each other and too little to the things that may kill them. The fantasy elements aren't slapped helter-skelter on top of the contemporary reality; they are entwined. The nonhumans are mysterious, and "other," and as capable of being good or evil or petty as are the humans. It all fits together remarkably well, and I recommend it.
This book was just a little more `fantasy' than my usual Urban Fantasy reads. It was also a breath of fresh air.
"Carousel Tides" is the story of Kate who once was the guardian of a piece of land called Archer's Beach. She also protected the carousel in Fun County. When Kate's grandmother disappears, Kate is forced to come back to Archer's Beach and face several different, dark aspects of her past.
In the wake of her grandmother's disappearance, it is up to Kate to get the carousel cleaned up and ready for the early tourist season, face her old friends, meet some new ones, and face a new resident who is potentially involved in some drug running on Archer's Beach.
That all seams fully set in reality. But the story is far from what it appears on first glance. The carousel has six animals who are actually bound prisoners from another world. (The story mentions 6 different worlds altogether). Gran is actually a dryad and her tree is sick, but not dead, and therefore she is missing, but probably not dead. Fae beings live and work along the pier.
I really enjoyed the story. I want a sequel now, but there isn't anything confirming one that I could find. The story is satisfyingly wrapped up but some things seem to suggest future books could be possible. Someone shows up from Kate's past at the very end and doesn't go anywhere. Kate's relationship with Borgan doesn't feel settled. And there are six different worlds, and only a couple were really touched on here.
I am giving the book four stars. Right now that goes against the `tide' as all the other reviews are five starred. My complaints are few and they are minor. I was confused in a couple points in the story and I thought things could have been explained better. I was slightly bothered by the climax with the bad guy. It was very underwhelming although there was great build up for it. Kate also had at least two dramatic events that shaped her past. I didn't think enough time was spent on them. One event was supposed to explain the reason Kate chose to leave the Beach (with dramatic consequences) and I thought the reasoning was very weak. It didn't wash for me. I loved the carousel and the idea of it. Those `animals' provided the best scenes in the book and I wanted more of them.
This book was unique and enjoyable. I suggest it to fantasy readers everywhere. I am crossing my fingers for more books set in this world.
Without being technical, I had just sent two losers, couldn't get past the 1st chapters, to the cloud and was about to give up for the day. But needing to read, as I`m wont to do, I tapped Carousel Tides and was immediately hooked, as should happen with a skillfully written work--haven`t put it down yet. I read a book a week, every week, and have two novels published, so I can be quite the critic. If fantasy is your bag, this is the one for today, can`t wait to begin the next in the series, which I am going to do now.
