The Gods of the Copybook Headings eBook Rudyard Kipling

Kipling's yesterday defines today's issues and direction too. Gods of the Copybook Heading defines well how today's debate will conclude.
"As it will be in the future, it was at the birth of Man' There are only four things certain since Social Progress began:-- That the Dog returns to his Vomit and the Sow return to her mire,
and the burnt Fool's bandaged finger goes wabbling back to the Fire;
And that after this is accomplished, and the brave new world begins,
When all men are paid for existing and no man must pay for his sins,
As surely as Water will wet us, as surely as Fire will burn,
The Gods of the Copybook Heading with terror and slaughter return!"
A great poem and as philosophical as are all of his poems.
If one chooses to ignore poetic history or any history they could at least experience that ignorance with the joy of being entertained by Kipling's poetry.

The Gods of the Copybook Headings eBook Rudyard Kipling Reviews

A short read.
Just the words are mesmerizing. However, most of us will require some interpretation of the piece to understand it.This is not included in the book purchase. A fun piece to memorize, either in part or in whole.
Perhaps the most thought provoking poem ever written. I know that comes off as hyperbole but read it and think about all it says about the human condition.
In reading this poem, you find yourself realizing how foolish we are all the while considering ourselves as so advanced from our predecessors. It makes me feel fooled by those who hold such high regard for their own wisdom. Fact is and has always been those who claim to be so wise are usually the ones in which have not the first trace! Read this poem a million times, it will always say something more!!
This is a brief 2-3 page poem, and it is a prime example of Kipling's dry wit and sarcasm, but it reads as if he were looking at the headlines today. This ought to be posted on every public bulletin board for people to read. It explains why we have such lousy leadership today- none of our leaders ever encountered the Gods of the Copybook Headings, and so they do not know what they do not know.
Once upon a time children used copy books to learn writing. At the top of each page were bits of wisdom based on the hard facts of reality gathered from centuries of experience and distilled into clear statements of universal and eternal truths. Children copied these line after line while practicing their writing, exercising their hands and brains at the same time. These truths are Kipling's Gods of the Copybook Headings. The poem makes it clear that many people will ignore logic, truth and common sense in order to pursue a path based on wishful thinking and contemporary fads.
This poem is now almost 100 years old. It seems that Kipling time-traveled to today, jotted down a few notes, and went home to write the poem. Or you could say that mankind doesn't learn much from past mistakes and not much has changed since 1919. I guess the public schools today have banished copybooks, especially since they don't want to teach cursive writing anymore. I'm certain they've banned the copybook headings, as all the proverbs and maxims used as timeless truths are now viewed as racist, sexist, homophobic, bigoted garbage spewed by religious nuts. I'm glad to have a copy of this poem. An awful lot of wisdom available here at for 99 cents.
