Born in Mason County, Texas in 1908, Fred Gipson grew up hearing stories of Indian raids, trail-driving and hound dogs. After attending the University of Texas, he wrote for newspapers before turning to pulp fiction in the early 1940s. After cutting his literary teeth writing Westerns, Gipson began writing novels. His books got good reviews and sold well, but in 1956, he produced a classic children's novel, Old Yeller. Walt Disney turned the book into a movie seen by millions over the years. Gipson died in 1973 and is buried in the State Cemtery in Austin, Texas. First published to favorable reviews in 1980 as Fred Gipson Texas Storyteller, this book sold out and remained out of print until author Mike Cox revised it for publication as a digital book. Cox, an elected member of the Texas Institute of Letters, is the award-winning author of 20 non-fiction books.
