Augustan Blunt is a washed out cop with a bad attitude, a drinking problem and a troubled past, oh, he's also dead but that's okay so is everyone else. Other than that things are just peachy.

Someone has stolen the Grim Reaper's head and Blunt has been told to find it. In a new city where the rules of the living don't apply Blunt's up to his neck in the brown stuff and he's never been much of a swimmer. With the aid of a woman who keeps turning involuntarily invisible, a journalist who hasn't written an article since she died, and a bureaucrat who can't say no to anyone, Blunt's got to stop whoever is stealing the heads of the city's elite.

As he begins his investigations he finds things aren't all they seem. Who are the Gloomwood Youth Order? What do you call the murder of someone already dead? Why are people having their heads chopped off? And what is in the hot dogs? With time slipping away he needs to learn what makes the city tick before there's no city left.

Dead Heads Gloomwood Book 1 eBook Ross Young Reviews

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. The synopsis alone had me intrigued and I wasn't disappointed.

Unique story line and interesting, quirky characters will hold your attention and I find myself wanting a second installment!

The editing needs a bit of work but doesn't detract from the story.
I like the concept of "life" after death in this book. No matter what you believe will happen in the afterlife, you're right. So somewhere in the Dead Heads universe, people are floating on fluffy clouds and others are shoveling coal amidst fire and brimstone. Some just cease to exist. Gloomwood, our after-death setting, is a catchall for people who had no fixed idea, in life, of what awaited them. Old dead gods also appear here, and lost hopes and dreams. The details are great.

Dead Heads is a fun read. The characters are wacky and entertaining. The book is clever and funny, with glimmers of Terry Pratchett or Douglas Adams. The bit about the support groups is hilarious, and I laughed out loud quite a bit at the well-timed and offbeat humor.

I received a copy of this book for an honest review. Dead Heads is an interesting story. It begins with the Grim Reaper's head going missing. Augustan Blunt, a newly deceased detective is tasked with the job of finding out who is responsible for the crime and why.
The setting is in Gloomwood, a town for the dead, a very interesting place to start the story.
Dead Heads has a unique premise and is written in a tongue-in-cheek way. The humor is different and refreshing. The characters are well-developed,interesting and relate well to each other.
I did find that the editing needs some work, but if you look past that into the story itself, you won't be disappointed. I could see this book launching into a series of books on the goings on in Gloomwood.
I liked the premise. Not a zombie land, but just a regular society, exactly the same as ours. Except that the people are all dead. And to be REALLY dead, you have to have your skull crushed. Or something like that. (One thing I didn't understand... sometimes in this book, dead people complained of pain from injuries... but they're already dead, aren't they, so how can they feel pain?)

The world-building was pretty interesting. The Grim Reaper is the head of Gloomwood, a city of the dead with an appropriate name.

The bit about the support groups was hilarious. That was one of the funniest paragraphs I've read for a long time. Too bad I don't know how to copy passages from , but it's in Chapter 35 (the chapter headings are hard to find).

Ultimately, though, the book was too convoluted for me to follow. There is supposed to be a mystery who is decapitating the most prominent citizens of Gloomwood, and why? The mystery kept going off in different tangents, and I found it hard to follow. I kept thinking the author was having fun at our expense, that he didn't care to lay out the mystery in an order that would set out the circumstances and the findings at a level that the reader would understand. Ultimately, I wasn't even sure if there was a mystery in the first place, or if the author really intended one, or just wanted a brilliant satirical piece.
I received a copy of this book for honest review. 'Dead Heads' is the mysterious tale of cop Augustan Blunt and his arrival in an afterlife where the grim reaper's head has just been stolen.

I thought this sounded like a really cool and original idea for a story, and I wasn't disappointed. I loved the sense of humour and the characters were a lot of fun. The dialogue was just brilliant - there was one chapter in particular which was basically all dialogue and I found it particularly amusing, but can't say anything else about it without dropping spoilers!

This is a unique read, with an excellent sense of humour. It does get pretty wacky, but in a really good way. The ending was satisfyingly shocking. The little teaser for the next book was great and I will definitely pick it up.

Simply put, this is my kind of book. It is unique, amusing and tells a good story in a fun and satisfying way. I look forward to more from this writer and will be grabbing his next book as soon as it's out!
This book had me hooked just from reading the synopsis. Everything about this book is very well written. It tells a great story but doesn't take itself too seriously and all in all comes across as a wonderful book.
Very imaginative, great story line. Not your average mystery. I can not wait for the next book to come out!
